Matthew Collins

BSc [Hons] Creative Computing

My name is Matthew Collins and I’m from Finglas in Dublin. I have been using computers from an early age and have always been curious about how software is created. I came to IADT to explore this curiosity. Since then, I have studied PHP, JavaScript, SQL, HTML, and more. When it came to creating and researching a 4th Year Project, I decided to study Data Visualization with particular emphasis on mapping.I have learned how to use the data science language R and how to work with and clean data. I developed a R project called visualizing tourism in Ireland.

Irish Tourism Dashboard

The aim of this research project was to develop an interactive data visualization of the tourism market in Ireland. The application displays all accommodations, attractions and activities in Ireland as listed by Failte Ireland. The application was developed in R and R Shiny. The link to my application is ShinyApps.io https://collmatt10.shinyapps.io/IrishTourismDashboard/

Irish Tourism Dashboard Thesis

This project involved conducting research into the history of visualization, spatial data, joining data and mapping of data using R and R Shiny.
