I’ve had a deep interest and love for the arts since a very young age and have a performative background in both display gymnastics and dance. I'm super excited to work in the industry now with a better understanding of the physical spaces around us and the knowledge I've gained in IADT.
For my major project I decided to design for The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I chose to focus on the two main characters personal spaces. Celia is an illusionist in the circus. Her performance tent is an intimate space with a black and white aesthetic.
Through the design process I used a combinate of software's such as AutoCAD and Sketch Up. I used Sketch Up to design Celia's tent and her backstage suite.
For the second protagonist, Marco, I focused on his private study. As the book is set in the Victorian era I had a lot of fun researching this period and it's furnishings. I chose to make his study as a scale model to not just explore different ways of reaching a final product but because it also challenges you in all aspects on design.
One of the parts of the project which I enjoyed the most was surprisingly the plans and elevations. Plans and elevations were something I used to dread in a project as they could take so long. But I found it so rewarding and enjoyed the time it took as this was my final college project and I had come so far.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, set in the late 1800's to the early 1900's, follows the two protagonists, Celia and Marco, through an old rivalry that places them in a competition between old and new magic that's destined to end in a battle to the death.
The story follows the characters along with the travelling black and white circus 'Le Cirque des Rêves' where Celia is an illusionist and Marco who is the owners assistant aswell as having powers himself.
I chose to focus on designing both Celia and Marco's personal spaces. For Celia that was her tent in the circus: Feats of Illustrious Illusion, and her backstage suite. For Marco I chose the study in his apartment where he spent most of his time.
