My thesis explored the use of negative space in film through films relationship with painting by looking at Ida by Pawel Pawelikowski. I studied multiple shots from the film and contrasted them against paintings by Polish painter Duda Gracz. I explored multiple different ways in which negative space or the lack of it can be used to further the narrative communicated through the frame in both the paintings and the shots from the film.
