Bridging The Research Gap - Exploring Non-Proprietary Grooming Solutions

Hair and fur grooming software is essential to bringing digital characters and creatures to life in film. A review of recent academic papers about grooming software and techniques determined a lack of information consumer grooming software. This paper provides a detailed report comparing three major grooming software publicly available (open-sourced) currently used in the animation field. The evaluated programs include Blender, Autodesk Maya, and SideFX Houdini. This paper provides the research done to evaluate how each program performs specific tasks. This paper will explain where grooming takes place in the visual effects pipeline. It provides a closer look at the tools available to artists today.
