Exploring the viability of VR tools in pre-production for 3D animated short film pipelines

This pilot study put Gravity Sketch on a Meta Quest 3S VR headset into the hands of 9 professional and recent graduate artists. Participants built preview-ready assets inside a “virtual production pipeline” then were reviewed in Unreal Engine. Results: high scores for creative freedom (M = 5.8/7) and spatial understanding, but time savings appeared only after users mastered the controls. The study positions VR as a rapid-prototyping and collaboration tool, ideal for block-outs and layouts, while highlighting on-boarding and mesh-cleanup hurdles that still tether final polish to traditional industry pipelines.
