My research focuses on developments in documentary animation in 1980s Britain. I use films from this period to examine how analogue production techniques generate authenticity in animation. This research follows a practice-led approach, part of which involves drawing and animating. Samples of this research are presented here as clips and still images.
My research focuses on a collection of short animated documentaries created in England in the early 1980s. They serve as the basis to inquire how authenticity is generated through analogue animation techniques. Chapter one analyses the narrative structure, subject matter, and audiovisual style of these films. Chapter two situates them in the history of representational strategies documenting reality in animation. Chapter three examines the use of analogue production techniques to support the evidentiary value of these animated documentaries, and considers how the techniques can be adapted to fiction.
