BA [Hons] Design for Stage + Screen Character MakeUp Design

Kim is a character designer passionate and confident in skills such as concept design, makeup and hair design, digital art, photoshop, special effects prosthetic sculpting and application.

This story is set in 1940s England, In a little cottage deep in the country. Rick, the cousin of Joe, Beth and Frannie, comes to stay and he joins their secret adventures in the lands of the Faraway Tree. The four children meet many different fairy-tale creatures and get into mischief. Together they venture into many new lands at the top of the tree.
For my concept I have taken this story out of the 1940s and set it in the interwar period of 1930s England. For my concept the Magical characters that the children encounter in the woods are War deserters, in which are mentally and physically damaged from the first world war. In this film adaptation the characters will be depicted as seen through the children's eyes / imagination.
In turn presenting themselves as: ‘Mr Moonface’ which in reality is truly a soldier with an injured/dented face. ‘MrWhatsHisName’ which in reality is a soldier which suffers from brain damage and has forgot his name. ‘Saucepan Man’ which in reality would be hiding out under pots and pans in Dame Wash-alot's kitchen. ‘Dame Washalot’ - A crazy old woman who’s allowed them to take refuge in her little rundown cottage under the ‘faraway tree’. And so on.. Together they go on adventures which truly only take place within the children’s imagination while climbing the tree.
For my Technical creations of this project I have chosen to create the imaginary characters of this piece and to portray the alter reality of the characters through the character designs.

Due to the pandemic I lacked the facilities to create my desired 'Moonface' character as a working multi-pieced prosthetic. So I resourced to sculpting, sealing him and colouring him using a mixture of painting and makeup application techniques instead.

The Magic Faraway Tree - Film Adaptation
