Finding Yourself in the Light of the Screen

In my Final Year Project, I explore how Jane Schoenbrun's films all wrestle with technology, identity and the screen. Across their filmography, the screen becomes a symbol for the negotiation of identity, the exploration of gender, the haunting of past and future, and the escape it grants in an antagonistic world. I examine how these themes are expressed throughout their three films: A Self-Induced Hallucination (2018), We're All Going to the World's Fair (2021) and I Saw the TV Glow (2024).

I've also attached a couple of other projects from the past 4 years down below, as well as a slightly expanded essay version of my Final Year Project at the bottom. These short films were created in my first and second year of the course, for the Media Production module.

When I Get Rich (Short Film, 2023) - I wrote and directed this sketch about a busker with big dreams.
Showtime! (Short Film, 2022) - I wrote and directed this short comedy/dramedy about two aspiring actors whose ambitions come to a head on stage.
Thesis: Finding Yourself in the Light of the Screen: How Jane Schoenbrun’s films wrestle with technology, identity, and the screen

BA (Hons) New Media Studies

Hi, I'm Erik! Having now (finally) completed my Bachelor's Degree in New Media Studies, I've spent the past four years creating all sorts of projects. I've put some highlights up here. I've always been interested in all the different aspects that go into art and film, whether it's cinematography, audio, music, editing, design, or anything else. I like to think you can see my passion for the entire process in my work. NMS gave me a platform to hone my skills further, and I'm looking forward to keeping it going!
