The central question driving this study is to what extent both luck and talent impacts an individuals' success within the film industry. The theoretical framework is heavily based around class, race and other socioeconomic factors. The paper will deconstruct the concept of representation and explain why diversity has become popularised within the film industry in recent years. Representation on screen tends to mirror the demographic of the industry. Historically, there has always been a disproportionate amount of people who grew up with social privilege or familial connections within the film industry. In this paper, the concept of luck will be identified as a factor that an individual is born with that benefits them within the industry, or the notion of being in the right place at the right time, a colloquial term to describe a circumstantial benefit unique to an individual. Talent will be classified as having a proven prominent level of artistry and originality that leads to critical acclaim. The research methodology relies on a brief qualitative analysis of the films and tv shows created by the filmmakers, alongside a more in-depth analysis on the timeline of the individuals’ success. By understanding the careers of these filmmakers, this paper draws conclusions about the roles of luck and talent in their success.
