Jocelyn Goggins 

BA [Hons] Character MakeUp Design

My name is Jocelyn Goggins. I specialised in Character Makeup Design on the BA in Design for Stage and Screen. I've always had a fascination with the practical effects I saw used in Films, films such as Labyrinth (1986) and The NeverEnding Story (1984) influenced my choice of future career. I have a passion for sculpting and bringing fantasy to life. I have worked on numerous Film projects over the past four years, collaborating on both student projects and external productions. I am now eager to begin my professional career, to further develop my skillset as work as a MakeUp Artist to create effects in the Film Industry.

The Bearded Lady - Madam Truska- She wears lots of blue to show her love and adoration for her partner Larten Crepsley. She is also immortal, her hair growth comes from her being a mermaid like species (again her love of blue from her time in the ocean.) She fell in love with 20s style so I took inspiration from this in the makeup style. While she has such an impressive and large beard, I wanted her to look beautiful and feminine so I wanted to eyemakeup and lashes to be intense

Ezra The Snake Boy- Since my concept was centered on a 19th-century freakshow- I decided the characters would be people with different diseases and disorders that were taken in by the cirque after being cast out by society. I decided to do psoriasis as the makeup to give him the snakeskin look.

Mr. Tall- I decided Mr. Tall would look the most ‘normal’ of the cirque. He is abnormally tall but in looks, he has no physical disease or deformities. I went with the long mustache to give him an intense presence as he is the ringmaster of the Cirque.

Rhamus TwoBellies- His look is inspired by 1940s fashion I decided to do the scars on his face as he would be injured while eating the strange materials that he eats such as metal and glass.

The Wolfman- I decided to go for a more modern look for wolfman. My concept for him was that he was a normal man with the disorder called Hypertrichosis, also known as werewolf syndrome. He was treated like a monster so he became one. The cirque has been ongoing for 500 years according to Mr Tall in the script so the freaks have been collected along the way. So I wanted each character to have a different vibe/era to their look. To show the collection over the years. The leather was chosen as I believed to character would have a love for the look due to its perception in pop culture- i.e. bikers, t-birds etc. Rebels in society.

I went with the red lip to show that love of blood and for contrast between the blue skin. Lashes to define to eyes and draw you in. I wanted to do tattoos as a challenge for technical skills and I believe it is a great way to add dimension to characters. Project Description- The Vampire's Assistant- Cirque Du Freak

Darren is just like any other teenager, until the day he encounters the Cirque du Freak and a vampire named Larten Crepsley. After Crepsley turns him into one of the undead, Darren joins the traveling sideshow and its parade of weird and monstrous creatures. As he learns to use his newfound powers, Darren unwittingly becomes a pawn in the struggle between vampire factions.

I focused my project on the freakshow, as it had the most scope for character design and character transformation. I have a love for monsters and creatures, I wanted to chose a text that could explore this and show off my technical skills that I have learned during this course.
For this project, my concept was taking 19th century freakshow influence for the base of my characters while pushing it further to give it an element of fantasy.
Authentic freakshow from the 19th century were shows that exploited people with disorders, diseases and disabilities. I used this research to create the looks that I have displayed here.



Jennifer’s Body: A story of a Victim or Villain?

Jennifer’s Body is a film starring Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried- made in 2009 and directed by Karyrn Kusuma and written by Diablo Cody.
The film centers around ‘popular hottie’ Jennifer (Megan Fox) who becomes possessed by a demon hell bent on eating the flesh of the high school boys. As she satisfies her appetite her ‘nerdy’ best friend Needy (Amanda Seyfried) figures out what’s happening and vows to stop her and save the town.
This film was deemed a flop and tanked at the box office. Years went by and it redeemed itself and became a cult classic – a massive hit in female audiences. But it posed the question to the modern fans. “Why is it only getting recognition now?” Or “Why didn’t I see this film when it came out?”
I was among these fans also pondering this. When it came to writing my thesis, I had an interest in horror films as well as feminism- to put those two together I began to look at how women were represented in horror films. This topic being too broad, I brought it back to one film in particular. That being Jennifer’s Body.
Through looking at the female vs male gaze, female sexuality in films, how female sexuality is punished in film, mis-marketing and just general misogyny – I broke down as to why Jennifer’s Body both fell to the depths before rising to grace. It has influenced many things as well as many women and I believe it is now getting the recognition it deserves.
