Flow in the FYP: Thematic Analysis of TikTok users’ flow experiences and algorithmic influence.

This thesis explores how TikTok's algorithim influences users' experience of flow, a state of deep immersion and focused engagement often associated with losing track of time and heightened enjoyment. Using thematic analysis, the study examines how personalised content contributes to immersion, prolonged engagement, and users’ awareness of algorithmic influence. As one of the world’s most widely used social media platforms, TikTok represents an important area of psychological research due to its impact on users attention, behaviour and digital wellbeing.

Project Objectives

The objective of this study was to explore how TikTok users experience psychological flow while engaging with the platform’s For You Page, with a particular focus on how algorithmically personalised content contributes to immersion, enjoyment, and prolonged engagement. The study also aimed to examine users’ awareness of algorithmic influence, their ability to disengage from the platform, and the emotional impact associated with extended use. Through thematic analysis, the research sought to contribute to a broader understanding of the psychological effects of algorithm-driven social media on attention, behaviour, and digital wellbeing.

Project Outcomes

This study highlighted the significant role of TikTok’s algorithm in shaping immersive user experiences and sustaining prolonged engagement through personalised content delivery. The findings demonstrated how users commonly experienced flow-like-states while using the platform, often describing altered awareness of time, focused attention and loss of control. Findings also highlighted although some participants recognised excessive engagement, the personalised and enjoyable nature of the content contributed to continued use and difficulty disengaging. The study notably found that many participants reported negative emotions and reduced wellbeing following extended engagement with the platform.
