2D Rough Animation and Character Design were and are my main focus for this project. As such my goal was to partake in multiple graduate film projects as a specialist, as well as small personal projects that I could work on in between film work, in order to build up a collection of animation and design work that would help me improve on and expand my skills.

My main objectives were to assemble a collection of Animation and Character Design work from both film and personal work that could then be used as portfolio examples. For film work, I aimed to take part as a key Character Designer during pre-production on at least one to two films, bringing designs through all the needed stages of finalization assigned to me, from rough concepts to fully completed turnaround and pose sheets depending on the director's needs. For animation work I planned to mainly focus on the rough animation stage, long character animation and a mix of long and short visual effects animation particularly.
By the end of the project I had a mix of rough character and visual effects animation, along with character design work in both rough concept stages and finalized stages. Through this process I was allowed to practice my clarity of shape in relation to design, which helped ingrain the habits of experimentation with shape and personality I had previously learned. In the realm of animation, the importance of clear key frames when planning out an animation was a main stand out during my time working of graduate films, and my prior design work during the pre-production stages of said film projects had helped me greatly in this regard.

Ruth Lawlor is a Character Designer and 2D Animator with experience in ToonBoom Harmony, TVpaint, Photoshop and After Effects. I have worked on multiple graduate films with a focus on clarity of form and variety of expression as key components to my work. I am constantly developing my skills and enjoy the process of figuring out the motions of animation and the fundamentals of character design, always being inspired by my peers and always striving to improve myself.
