Ageing in Animation

The overall objective of my project was to make a film that resonated with me on a personal and creative level. As someone surrounded by strong and talented women, I wanted to showcase and celebrate both the individuality and the shared experiences that I have seen in those around me and in my own life. As my thesis explored ageing in animation, I wanted to also highlight ageing in womanhood and how it is perceived by the individual, the family unit, and society as a whole.

Why Ink?

Directing a film for the first time came with a steep learning curve which involved adapting quickly to new and sometimes unexpected demands. Throughout my time in IADT, I have experimented with multiple modalities to animate and have always felt most comfortable using tactile materials. Artistically I decided to use ink throughout the project and found that it helped to emphasise the perceived simplicity of childhood. I love how unpredictable ink is, which allows me take a more experimental approach to my work.

Thesis: The Portrayal of Ageing in the Animated Movies of Disney and Ghibli

This dissertation explores the differing approaches that Disney and Studio Ghibli have towards ageing. I found that Studio Ghibli depicts a more complex and nuanced portrayal of later life, allowing for altruism, wisdom and humour in the face of the challenges of later life as well. I explored positive approaches for filmmakers of animated movies that can encourage initiatives to be inserted into undergraduate curricula of studies as well as the continuing professional development of all filmmakers which allows opportunities of mutual learning.
