Thesis: An Analysis of Gender and Violence in ‘I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream’

Harlan Ellison’s 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream' is a divisive pedagogy on storytelling and expressions of gender and violence in storytelling. Having written more than 1700 stories, essays and articles and dabbled in television, screenwriting, comics and film, 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream' stands out with critical acclaim in its exploration of the human condition, among his many accreditations. The brutalistic short story, published in 1967 is an intense and succinct narrative that imports a unique take on gender and violence in the horror genre. Pulling from conceptual discussions of hegemonic masculinity, discipline and punishment, and the role of gender in the horror genre this thesis dissects the short story and video game adaptation of 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.'
