BASENOTE

In a world where minimum wage doesn’t cover the minimum, a musician and a bartender are both struggling to make ends meet. Our bartender finds a common ground with a “cyber-space sensation” where they didn’t expect one.

Four images featuring character design concepts for BASENOTE. The upper two are cartoonish concepts of the Bartender. The lower left is a more anime-style, human-proportioned version of the bartender. On the bottom right, there is a collection of sketches featuring the Musician in a cartoonish art style, along with his instrument.
BASENOTE’s character design philosophy changed and evolved over time in the pre-production phase. The upper left image was the Bartender’s first solidified character design. I further pushed the design on the upper right and went with it.
Four images of background work used in BASENOTE. The two left are from the walking segment, and the right two are from within the bar.

Objectives of BASENOTE, 2d animated film:

This 2D animation aimed to express subtle world-building and the power of simple, person-to-person, chance meetings in a world that often feels overwhelming. It contains some commentary on the modern emphasis on “work” as a measure of personal value, the overwhelm of modern city life, small nods towards the worries about artificial intelligence’s influence on the global population, as well as the hostile every-day environments people may find themselves in while looking for better life opportunities. Over all, this film aimed to express the lived experience of somebody who doesn’t feel like they fully fit into the world around them and are at odds with the system that they’re supposedly meant to be able to thrive in.
