Women of Stargate: How they changed the Sci-Fi genre

My final year project features Two Tv shows, Stargate SG-1 (1997), Stargate Atlantis(2004) and X files(1993). I talk about what Stargate done for women and comparing some of it to X-files, I show this through different scenes in Stargate with the use of Feminist theory.

FYP Project
Short film: Debt, My first proper short film in 2nd year
Interview that I done the camera work for in my 3rd year
FYP aims

What I aimed to show in this project:
1. That Stargate was one of if not the best representation for women in the 90's.
2. The different ways that it is good representation
3. Why the creators made such good female characters
4. Connect some of what I say in the video to some books.

FYP outcome

While making this project I learnt a lot that I didn't know about feminism and the Stargate TV shows. While I thought I knew the Stargate TV shows back to front, I learnt a lot about the female characters that I didn't realise when watching them my previous watches. This helped me see what made these show such good representation more than I thought they were.

Making both the written part and the video part of this project made me able to have most of the academic part with most of the book research in the essay and have the parts that are better seen in the video, this made it easier to show the scenes that I wanted to without having a lot of talking about research, that is better to be read than read out, it would have made the video boring. This video made it a lot easier to show what I was talking about instead of having to read about a scene in the middle of an essay. With this format of having the video and the essay, I could show an interview that connected to what I was talking about and showing. This made it much better as seeing the scenes and interview together made it easier to follow instead of reading.

Overall I think I done well with the project as I showed what I wanted to in the video and and used all the academic information that I needed in the essay. I hope that you see that in this project.

Thesis: Women of Stargate: The representation of women in media

In this paper I talk about the representation of women in the collection of movies and TV shows Stargate. I talk about the representation and how stations want to pull in as big an audience as they can so they have representation for everyone, but this only started happening in the late eighties , early nineties. I then talk about the negative images of women and what women actually wanted to see. Women wanted to see their work outside the home, which was first shown properly by ‘The Mary Tyler Moore show’ and ‘Cagney and Lacey’, these shows also had an emphasis on the bonds between the women characters. The traditional crime dramas had little consideration for domestic life ‘but the success of series such as ‘Cagney and Lacey’ brought conventionally feminine interests such as romance and family into the police station’.

Then I mention third wave feminism and how it affected TV shows and how they show women. I talked about how ads and posters for TV shows would sexualise women if they were the main character. I compare Buffy the Vampire slayer and Stargate SG-1 in this paragraph. I talk about women's role in the Sci-Fi genre and how they were sexualised. Lastly I talk about how women were shown in the Stargate movie and what the movie did that was good and bad.
