Stand By Wrestling is a 30 minute live broadcast show. This was a pro-wrestling event Karl and fellow student Maxim Bunea-Jivanescu developed for their final college project. The event was centred around a brutal wrestling match that introduced mystery weapons such as a knuckle duster, barbed wire and a brick. The bout would be between two wrestlers, Guy Weller and William Degger, for the Stand By Wrestling (SBW) title. This event, named "Legacy Finale" was also SBWs first ever live broadcast, where the company would go from underground to corporate, under the new reign of a Miss Redmond.
The primary objective of this show was to create a compelling narrative centered on themes of nepotism and a "corporate vs. underground" dynamic. We achieved this by integrating pre-recorded videos and live speeches with active involvement from our side characters and the audience.
By combining these elements with the match itself, our plan was to craft a live broadcast experience that would be both entertaining and memorable.
My role was Director on Stand By Wrestling, which involved overseeing all departments and intertwining all the elements for our live show.
The film tells the story of Mohammed Al-Sader who left Iraq at eighteen and now calls Dublin home. Through his memories of Baghdad, including the night his mother vanished, his hasty escape, and the life he has created in Ireland, we get a glimpse of how history lives within him and shapes his life. The narrative is told through the eyes of his son, the director, who gently uses the camera to explore questions that have never quite been asked.
I was the DOP on this project, which was mostly filmed over a weekend in Cornwall. This project was interesting to be apart of and it was a wonderful experiance to be welcomed by the Al-Sader family. Due to the sensitive subject matter it was important to approach the subject with care, while also capturing the story in a way that was true and honest. It was a great learning experiance, with many meaningful moments throughout.
My thesis aimed to draw a correlation between the monetary gain seen from the spike in popularity of reality television and the mistreatment of the members of the public who went on these shows. This study takes an in-depth look at several reality television shows, with the main case studies being The Jerry Springer Show and The Biggest Loser. This study is backed by qualitative research that reflects how decisions made by producers and networks are driven by a desire to make money, and how this, in turn, leads to a decrease in care for the members of the public who take part.
