Wise girls is a horror/comedy series following the exploits of twenty-nothings, Aisling, Tríona and Faye, as they start experimenting with ancient druidic magic. With no limits and no plan whatsoever, the girls' lives descend into chaos. Set in the beating heart of Dublin City, the show explores themes of friendship, girlhood and coming of age.
Towards the end of the troubles, where sectarian violence defined everyday life, a new kind of haven emerged on the dance floors of raves. One where Catholics and Protestants could co-exist, and dance to the shared religion of music. A Place To Stand is a colourful documentary that explores how these raves became a form of rebellion and unity in a time of violence and division. What happens when youth have no place of escape and connection, and can music create just that?

This thesis examines feminine-horror or gender-specific fear as it is depicted in horror cinema, and how it shapes audience identification. Using qualitative textual analysis combined with psychoanalytic and feminist theory frameworks, each thematic chapter analyses genre conventions to see whether sympathy is created for their female protagonists. The analysis draws on Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection, Lacanian theory of the Gaze, Laura Mulvey’s male gaze theory, and Rosi Braidotti’s theory of nomadic subjectivity. The thesis finds that horror, as a genre, has the power to create a sense of empathy and understanding which can reshape how audiences view real-life issues surrounding patriarchy.
