Thesis: What are the criteria that record labels consider when determining which upcoming projects to release in relation to Jungle/Drum and Bass music?

This thesis is based on the question “What are the criteria that record labels consider when determining which upcoming projects to release in relation to Jungle/Drum and Bass music?”

Interviews, discussions and surveys will be conducted to retrieve responses from independent jungle/drum and bass record labels. The literature review discusses the various factors that contribute to the criteria record labels look for from emerging artists in the modern day. The review begins by analysing the role of record labels, their historical context and the background of the genre I am investigating. The review analyses effective factors artists take into consideration when communicating with record labels in the digital era. These include building an artist brand and identity on social media, artist presence on streaming platforms, demo submission preparation in relation to production value and target label alignment. Furthermore, the review finally discusses the importance of building an artist-label relationship. The methodology explores the research carried out in relation to interview, discussion and survey data in conjunction with the development of an artefact for feedback purposes. The primary aim of this thesis will be to provide a comprehensive analysis of what defines a labels criteria in relation to an emerging artists music release.
