How the Explanation of Process Affects Audience Enjoyment

This thesis investigates the impact of explaining the creative process of a musical piece on audience enjoyment, and whether 'in-person' explanations have a different effect. The project aims to illustrate that insight into an artist's work can create a deeper connection to the artist and the piece of art they have created.
The findings showed that there was an increase in positive audience perception after receiving information about the creative process and there was a further increase when the information was conveyed 'in-person'.

"The true mystery of artistic creation resides rather in those aspects that cannot be fully explained even by the artist."

Project Objectives

This project aimed to investigate if explaining the creative process behind art can lead an audience to a deeper level of understanding of the work. Inspired by the sample breakdown series on Tracklibs YouTube account, I exclusively used samples to build all three tracks. This allowed me to delve deeper into the history and cultural backgrounds of the samples I used.

I also aimed to see if communicating the creative process in different ways would affect the outcome, I did this by comparing video and in-person communication.

Project Outcomes

I found that explaining the process did improve audience enjoyment of the work and improved their connection to the art. 60% of participants strongly agreed the track sounded more professional after receiving an explanation of it, compared to only 47% of the audio-only survey participants (the audio-only participants only listened to the song and received no information on the creative process).

Comparing video and in-person learning, I found that in-person explanations vastly improved the audience's enjoyment of the work. 83% of participants in the in-person survey strongly agreed that their enjoyment improved compared to only 58% in the video survey.
