The Old Way

My final year project explores the role of Sean-Nós singing in preserving Irish identity, and how modernisation and short-form content can affect its perception and cultural relevance. The project created a 6-episode mini documentary series, through a series of performances, interviews and visual media, that examines the balance between tradition and evolution with Sean-Nós.

Aim of the project

To explore how sean-nós still connects to Irish identity today and to look at how audiences react to traditional and modern versions of Sean-Nós. To use short-form content and visual media to make sean-nós more accessible, as well as mix traditional and modern production. The project aimed to encourage more engagement with Irish culture and this tradition through music and said visual content creation.

Project Outcomes

To create a series of videos combining traditional and modern Sean-Nós music and record performances and interviews exploring Irish culture and identity. To show different ways Sean-Nós can be presented to modern audiences and to encourage more interest and discussion around Sean-Nós, as well as explore how social media and visual content can help keep the tradition relevant.
