Stormy Nights

Victorian/ Regency era style miniature mechanical theatre box. The design was a combination of more substantial wooden mechanical theatres of the time, and the popular toy paper theatres of the time, particularly Pollock’s theatres. The opulent exterior of the theatre box, with its gold filigree elements and bright colours, contrast the interior scene of the boat traversing rough seas on a stormy night.

Project Objectives

My primary objective for this project was to create a piece that was vibrant, striking, and an immersive experience for audiences. I wanted to challenge myself to learn and execute new model making skills. As someone who prefers sculpting and more natural styles, I wanted to attempt more hard edge model making, for example laser cutting, 3d printing, wood work. However I still wanted to include other aspects where I could sculpt, mould, cast, and paint.

Project Outcomes

I believe I was able to achieve my objectives for the project. I experimented with different types of model making and developed new skills in areas I hadn’t devoted a lot of time to previously. I also expanded my expertise in areas I was more familiar with. I am very happy with my final piece, particularly the filigree elements. The box itself is made from plywood and mdf. I designed the box on autocad and laser cut the pieces before assembling, using isopon to create a chamfered edge between the two layers. I designed the filigree and column tops and bottoms and sculpted them out of chavant. I then created sillicone moulds of them and cast them in polyurethane resin. I laser cut the roof tiles and assembled them by hand. The waves were 3d printed before sanding, priming and painting. The cliffs were carved from foam and covered in plaster. The mechanical element is a simple bracket that holds the rods attached to the three waves, they have a wheel attached to each of these rods and bands that go from the two outer waves to the middle one, which acts as the handle.I would love to create something similar again, now knowing what worked and what needs a lot of time dedicated to designing, etc.

Thesis: Imperialism and the Irish Landscape: A Study on Landscapes and their Representation from 17th to 21st Century

The portrayal and therefore the perception of Ireland has evolved over the last four centuries. In this thesis I explore the specific portrayals of Irish landscapes from the 17th to the 21st century and discuss the impact of Imperialism on these changing representations. The thesis investigates the evolution of Ireland’s identity across a range of different mediums and cultural contexts in terms of imperialism in Ireland. The first chapter examines Irish landscapes through 17th and 18th century paintings, specifically An Idyllic Landscape by William Ashford, while the following two chapters examine portrayals of Irish landscapes in cinema, specifically The Quiet Man 1952 and The Banshees of Inisherin 2022. The influence of Imperialism is evident across all examples explored. As a post-colonial country, Irelands landscape paintings and cinema represent this complex identity. The thesis discusses the lasting impact of these representations on Ireland’s national identity and physical geography.

BA (Hons) Design for Film

My name is Isabel Scully, I’m a final year model making student in IADT, from Cork. I have always loved making art, especially 3d art. This, as well as my love for film and storytelling, led me to study design for film and specialise in model making. Over the past four years I’ve become passionate about lots of different forms of art and model making that I hadn’t discovered yet. I’m especially interested in stop motion, sculpting, and mould making.
