She’s Got Grit is a children’s book series on a mission to empower and inspire young girls aged 7-11 years old, through thrilling tales of adventure, courage, and resilience. Centered around strong, diverse female characters who take on extreme sports, from kickboxing to mountain biking, rock climbing and rollerskating.

In Ireland, approximately 1 in 5 girls disengage from sport during the transition from primary to post-primary school. One of the major reasons is that they don’t feel good enough. She's Got Grit proposes a campaign and publication of children's books in partnership with Sport Ireland and The O'Brien Press. She's Got Grit aims to challenge gender stereotypes, nurture self-confidence, and ultimately promote equal gender participation across all sports.
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the representation of women in a relatively new sport—climbing. This sport would have been traditionally viewed as a masculine activity, with little participation by women. With the sport steadily growing in popularity, particularly with the introduction of the three disciplines of bouldering, lead climbing and speed climbing in the 2021 and 2024 Olympic Games, media coverage on climbing has seen a huge increase.
This dissertation will begin by looking at advertisements and magazine covers from the 1970s to the 1990s, where women climbers were subject to objectification. It will then look at climbing styles, and how the nature of human anatomy means that the differences in ability between the top male and female competitive climbers is marginal, unlike many other sports. Lastly, it will explore the rise in female participation in the sport, and women’s representation in modern day social media.
