Sophie Burns
Sophie Burns creates seascapes through the concept of immortalising the unforgiving Irish Sea. She pulls ideas from dismantling and erosion by using college to create a new landscape that combines layers of the Irish coast. She draws parallels from her collages to her paintings of seascapes. She uses elements of the corresponding collage and translates them to paint. The roughness of the Irish coast inspires Burns due to the only constant of the waves are the ever-changing coastal landscape due to erosion. Burns grew up listening to her grandmother always quoting that ‘Tide and time wait for no man’. This has continually inspired Burns who grew up around the sea to transform her grandmother's saying into a mantra in her artwork.
Sophie Burns is a visual artist based in Dublin. Her current practice is immortalising the Irish coast through acrylic seascapes and dismantling the landscape through collage work. Burns photographs the Irish coast and investigates building her own landscape by slicing up images together. Burns also paints acrylic on canvas and recreates the unforgiving Irish coastal waves. Burns communicates the roughness of the rocks and the force of the waves by using palette knives and brushes. She also implements a technique that involves splattering paint and water, allowing the water to drip and create a natural movement. Burns has exhibited in IADT student shows at IMMA studios (2023), The Orangery (2025) and Pallas Projects/Studios (2026).
