Hi, my name is Cian and I have just completed my fourth year of Creative Music Production. My passions are playing bass and collaborating with others to make music. Throughout my time in the course I have developed a love of audio programming and hope to take my skills learned forward throughout my career.

Project Description

This project set out to answer the question, "Can real-time gestural control of effects enhance a live performance?" To answer this question, I designed a gestural control interface that allowed me to use hand gestures to change audio effects. I then composed a piece of music using this interface and performed the piece to get feedback on the experience from an audience.


Gesture-Based Audio Manipulation

My thesis explores the work I did in creating the interface, composing the music, creating a survey and doing the performance. I explored previous work done in the area of instrument design and the principles for designing new instruments. The previous work done in the area of instrument design influenced the design of my interface. I talk through the methods I used to answer my research question. I then looked at the work I did in regard to the survey and talked through my code. Lastly I discuss the results and implications of my findings and explore the areas that the project can go to in the future.
