My name is Gavin, and I'm an artist and model-maker with a particular interest in fantasy, character design, and worldbuilding. Imagining fictional worlds and the people in them has always been one of my biggest passions, and with my newfound 3D modelling skills, I can finally bring those same ideas to life. My love for animated media and games have had a huge influence on my craft, and I too want to contribute to such a culture. For my final year I wanted to push my digital modelling skills and make both a character and a whole game level.
My final project is a short game experience made in Unreal Engine 5. The player, the inspector in this scenario, begins on a pier leading up to an eccentric-looking pirate ship dubbed the ‘Jellyfish Jamboree’. Upon boarding, the player will meet the ship’s captain, Captain Dokuzawa, who cheerily greets the inspector and allows them to traverse the ship to their heart’s content. The player can freely inspect the ship and its many quirks and points of interest, and once they are done exploring, can end the session by once again talking to the captain. This project is a letter of appreciation to character & game design. I thoroughly enjoy immersive games and animated media, and I want to create such things myself in the near future. Assets like the ship itself and the character were modelled in Blender, textured in Adobe Substance Painter, and imported into Unreal Engine 5.
