Joey Chong

BA [Hons] Visual Communication Design

Hello! My name is Joey Chong and I am delighted to be presenting my work at the 2024 Visual Communications graduate show. I'm always passionate and eager to learn about all things design. I particularly love the design process and have always enjoyed image-making, art direction and type play. My skills in these areas allow me to generate vibrant and impactful designs that address what the users want. I enjoy working with intricate and at times abstract ideas, exploring how they can be conveyed successfully through image and language. I am excited to move forward and develop as a designer and show my abilities.

Introducing the Multifaceted Narratives of Studio Ghibli

This dissertation explores three themes in Studio Ghibli films. The analysis looks at how Studio Ghibli's well-known films, directed by Hayao Miyazaki, tie themes together to create elements of magic and nature. The study sheds light on Ghibli's balance between the empowering themes of nostalgia, environment issues and feminist narratives. By examining these themes in Miyazaki’s work, we can understand how Studio Ghibli films have a lasting impact on children and adults alike both in Japan and throughout the rest of the world. Although the animated worlds created by Studio Ghibli are fictional, they spark discussions that are very much grounded in real-world societal concerns.
