My name is Alannah. I finished my degree in New Media Studies in 2021. For my final year project I researched the social progression of the corset using a blog as my narrative structure. I have a big interest in fashion and it is a career that I would like to pursue. I looked at the history of the corset and used the corset trends of 2020 and 2021 to provide a comparison through the lens of feminism.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s fashion designer Vivienne Westwood mimicked 18th-century style corsets using similar shapes and printed images. She relied on boning, V-shapes, and wide shoulder straps to mirror earlier styles. Westwood created her 1990 Spring/Summer corset using French artist Francois Bouchers' 1743 painting 'Daphnis and Chloe, Shepherd Watching a Sleeping Shepherdess.'
As part of the blog I created a photoshop gallery using my own corsets as the link between the historical and the modern.
This photoshop piece is based on Vivienne Westwood's iconic 1990's corsets where two models were seen kissing after the show because of how in love they were with the clothing.
This piece is based on the 1960s which was an era for female change and empowerment. Sex, drugs and love were free flowing in the era and provided a change for the corset from the 1970s onwards.
I created a short video in order to shape the feminist narrative for the project. I spoke about the 1960s and 1970s whereby social, political and feminist movements were fabricated. I then crossed these with modern intersectional movements which are prevalent on social media to provide an insight into the substantial change that has been made in the last 60 years.
For the project I interviewed Ellen Mirojnick, the costume designer for the 2020 Netflix show Bridgerton. The blog post is dedicated to Mister Pearl, the corsetier for the show and Ellen Mirojnick, the costume designer. I looked at the similarities between the Regency Era and Mirojnick's modern depiction of the corset in the era.
The Social Progression of the Corset

The blog 'Shaping The Corset' looks at the social progression of the corset through the lens of feminism. Dating back to the 16th century and continuing to the 21st century, I researched the social attitudes towards the corset and how they progressed within the society of its time.
