Hello! My name is Faye, I'm an enthusiastic soon-to-be graduate from IADT's Creative Computing course. I have a background in Computer Science and a passion for creative problem solving.
This project is an interactive visualisation of the Irish Covid-19 case numbers from March 2020 to March 2021. It allows users to look back on the year and see how the pandemic affected the population of Ireland. An application such as this could prove beneficial in the analysis of public health data, as well as aid in educating the public with reliable information.
Hindsight is 2021 is a full MERN stack application with D3 integration. The data used was collected from the HSE and HSPC under the 2014 Freedom of Information Act.
The ideal outcome for this project was the research and development of a web application that displayed real data based on the Irish Covid-19 case numbers in a clear and coherent manner.
It was hypothesized that the utilisation of modern technologies would allow for the smooth and intuitive development of a visual experience, that engaged and informed the end user.
The conclusion of usability tests determined that the initial objective was indeed achieved. Innovative technologies allowed for the creation of an intuitive and functional visualisation of real health data. Users of all experience were capable of navigating, reading, and comprehending the visualisation, with the majority of test participants indicating their understanding of the pandemic had increased after the use of this application.
There is a plethora of opportunities for further research and development on this topic. The application of technology in communicating data has unlimited potential for education and further data analysis.
