Ben Condell is a photography focused artist based in Dublin. Originally concentrating on sports photography, Ben, a self-proclaimed petrol head combined his work with sports with his love of cars to focus both on sports photography and more contemporary work centred around the car world with a particular exploration on his involvement in it. Ben has in the past also created work focused around his life using people close to him to tell interesting stories and give another view on his life.
A Gallon Of Gas and A Match explores Condell’s world of automobiles and projects. This isn’t showing a shiny finished perfect project or a crazy build, but rather the hard work and the back garden engineering that makes things work. In doing so he gives us a glimpse into his own life and that of a project car.
He wants to make you wonder; what is this and how come it is this way? Rather than explaining the work in detail, he hopes that you can create your own meaning from this big and dirty project. Condell, as is often the case in his work, is an integral part of the project. Although mainly focusing on the van and the often ‘rash’ nature of the build, the images offer insights that transmute this quite big and dirty item into a beautiful, interesting piece to view.
