The Road Less Travelled: Experiential Narrative & Gameplay in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' can be considered a masterclass in what is known as ‘experiential storytelling’. This is where the lived background experiences of the reader, influences how one interprets any particular narrative. Breath of the Wild embodies this concept from its overarching narrative all the way down to its inherent mechanical design. As a game, the player becomes an interactive part of the narrative, and Breath of the Wild serves to minimise the gap between player and game avatar as much as feasibly possibly within the videogame genre.
