Heather is a Background and Layout Artist. During their time at IADT they found their passion for concept development and environments. Having a strong interest in composition and world-building, which lead them to the decision to specialize in backgrounds for their final year. This is a showcase of their course work on their fellow classmates’ films, which presents a robust portfolio of work.
Heather spent their final year working as a Background Specialist across several projects, most notably: Faely Odd (Tara Gavigan), Flu Season (Niamh Herkommer) and White Lobster (Siyuan Xu). This allowed them to work at several points of the production pipeline from beginning to end. Their work consisted largely of creating 2D backgrounds, layouts and compositing animation onto those created backgrounds.
'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild' can be considered a masterclass in what is known as ‘experiential storytelling’. This is where the lived background experiences of the reader, influences how one interprets any particular narrative. Breath of the Wild embodies this concept from its overarching narrative all the way down to its inherent mechanical design. As a game, the player becomes an interactive part of the narrative, and Breath of the Wild serves to minimise the gap between player and game avatar as much as feasibly possibly within the videogame genre.
