BSc [Hons] Creative Media Technologies

My name is Szilard Ovari and I'm a fourth year Creative Media Technologies student. During the four years I had the opportunity to discover many areas of my interest through the course, I had a keen interest in audio and visual technologies. This course provided great opportunities to practice these skills with projects, assignments and outside activities.

This picture shows how the PCB was created and how the parts were soldered on by using a reflow oven . This is a great way to make PCBs safely and efficiently as the user only needs to place the solder on and the components to the board .

This image shows the completed PCB that was taken out of the reflow oven. The remaining work is to include the potentiometers and the header pins to be bale to make connections .

Finished Arduino shield which is a key component in this project and allows the user to read in analogue audio signals and transfer them to the arduino where they can be processsed.

Testing being done on the prototype using an oscilloscope and code running from the Arduino.

Further testing, which was an important aspect of this project. The output displayed on the oscilloscope is an audio test signal which has been generated in the software.

This code was developed to test the Arduino shield and to provide a visual reference to the user of a test signal that had the characteristic of an increasing amplitude over time.

Code for Endian Swap This code is a main part of the project as it is introduced to solve a development issue by swapping data bits generated by the arduino.

This is the code to detect the frequencies or notes that are picked up by the microphone . This is also the main feature of the project as the tuner needs to be able to detect sound and break it down so that the Arduino is able to process it.

Project Description

This project is about music technology which was developed with an Arduino. The project is an Automatic Guitar tuner that allows the user to tune their guitar by holding up a device to the headstock and plucking the string. Then this audio would be picked up by a microphone which sends send the signal to the Arduino where calculations determine the pitch and turn a motor that would turn the tuning pegs accordingly to the right pitch. This would create an effortless experience for the user and speeds up this process.

Thesis Title

The thesis of the project highlights the research that was done to implement the original concept. It is also a guideline to how it was created and what technologies were used . Tests were carried out and documented to show the results of working components along with the more exciting hardware development aspects of this project.
