My name is Cian Ryan, I am in my final year of doing Modelmaking, 3D design and Digital Art at IADT. I chose this course as it stuck out to me as a very interesting, fun and practical practice. Since the start I have learned much and have grown a love for sculpting, modelmaking and doing digital art. The course also intersects with my passions and interests such as history, videogames and art. I would love to get work related to these things, particularly working with history museums recreating artifacts or making dioramas which my final project reflects. I have done things I never thought I would be able to do and so I am optimistic about the future.
My project is a Diorama depicting the siege of Rochester 1215 CE. It is historically accurate and is intended to interest people into the methods and aesthetics of an early 13th century medieval siege. It is also meant to captivate viewers with the dynamic action within the diorama. It is a meter by meter in length and width and comes apart in three sections for transporting. The castle parts are made up of blue foam and all slotted together during fabrication, but are all glued now. The three sections of the base are also made of blue foam. Everything was plastered and then painted over and detailed. I digitally made the soldiers and 3D printed them. I also made use of LED lights for smoke and fire. I wanted to do a piece that incorporates much of what I learned from the course and also one that would expose me to more new things. I hope this may lead to the historic museum modelmaking business or just history in general in some way.
My Thesis is about how games could impact education positively. It looks at videogame's unique qualities and how they could effect the educational experience. It examines how videogames engage and assist learning. It looks at motivation in relation to games and education. It explores gamification which is the using of game elements to aid in education and game-based learning which is the using of games to educate. I examine several games and developed concepts to do with games and delve into how games function.
