I began this course as a musician with no prior experience with music production. Throughout my time here I have been introduced to many aspects of music technology, as well as finding my place in communities dedicated to addressing gender disparity in music tech. Working in multiple recording studios has helped to gain confidence in my surroundings and my ability, and through my studies I have gained a number of transferable skills that I will take with me as I further my work.
This research aims to identify and evaluate new strategies for mastering audio within a new rapidly and continuously evolving frontier. Immersive audio is a three-dimensional sound field created by combining lateral and overhead speakers. Formats such as Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 RA have played a pivotal role in making spatial audio available to consumers through the playback of binaural audio on headphones, creating a full 3D experience supported by online music streaming platforms. The concept of mastering for immersive audio differs from a traditional stereo workflow. Since its existence, the mastering process has been channel-based, but the recent advent of object-based technologies demands new ways of working. This research aims to investigate how an immersive track is mastered and prepared for release, through research and interviews with industry professionals.
